Cruise Line Job Types List Types of Employment

Food & Beverage Department

Passengers go on cruise holidays to visit different parts of the world but increasing the biggest attraction of the holiday is the enjoyment of the actual onboard facilities. As with holidays onshore people on cruise ship will go out and have a few drinks and a meal in the evenings. In addition breakfasts and lunches also become part of the daily social outings of the passengers who are paying to be spoilt.

Working within this large department you will be responsible for working within in a team to ensure that the passengers are fully attended to regarding food and drink throughout their whole stay onboard. Success within this department will ensure the passenger returns again and again to cruise with the same company. Below are a number of jobs that can be found within the food and beverage department onboard.

Steward/Stewardess (Salary $1000-$1600 US dollars per month (tips/gratuities))
General duties within the lounge and restaurants. No previous experience required for this position although employers request a good level of English.

Bar Steward/Stewardess (Salary $1500-$1900 US per month (tips/gratuities))
Serving drinks to passengers within the lounges and on deck. Previous experience within a similar role would be beneficial along with good English skills. Possible promotion to Bartender from this position.

Bartender (Salary $1800-$2500 US dollars per month)
Responsible for the stewards and the organisation and pouring of drinks for the passengers. Previous experience required for this position along with fluent English skills.

Junior Waiter/Waitress (Salary $1400-$1900 US dollars per month (tips/gratuities))
Responsible for general duties within the restaurant e.g. serving drinks, and meals. Previous restaurant experience an advantage along with fluent English skills. Promotion possibilities to Assistant Waiter/Waitress from this position.

Assistant Waiter/Waitress (Salary $1500-$2200 US dollars per month(tips/gratuities))
Within this position you will give direct assistance to the waiters within the restaurant e.g. serving meals, taking orders etc. Previous restaurant experience an advantage along with fluent English skills. Promotion opportunities to Waiter/Waitress from this position.

Waiter/Waitress (Salary $2200-$3500 US dollars per month (tips/gratuities))
Managing the junior and assistant waiters you will also give further advice to passengers regarding the dishes on the menu, how it is cooked etc. Previous experience within a restaurant or hotel is essential for this position along with fluent English skills. Promotion opportunities to Head Waiter from this position.

Head Waiter (Salary $2600-$4500 US per month)
Responsible for all the waiters within the restaurant and for the relationships between. Previous experience within a restaurant or hotel is essential for this position along with fluent English skills.
