The Engine Department (Mechanical/Electrical Department)
Positions within this area can be viewed as the most crucial on the ship as no-one is going anywhere if the vessel cannot be powered. Modern engine rooms are now well ventilated, and well insulated against the mechanical noises from their huge engines. If your mechanically minded the engine department could hold your perfect job. We list a number of positions found within this department.
Wiper (Salary $1000-$1200 US dollars per month)
Responsible for various general duties within the engine room. Usually reporting to the fitter you could find yourself doing a different task every day. No previous experience required for this position although basic English skills are generally requested by the employer. Possible promotion opportunities to fitter over time.
Fitter (Salary $1300-$2000 US dollars per month)
Responsible for the routine maintenance and repair of all mechanical equipment onboard the vessel. Time served trades people generally required for this position although previous onboard experience may be taken into consideration. Employers generally prefer a minimum level of English for this position.
Plumber (Salary $1500-$1900 US dollars per month)
Responsible for the repair of all plumbed onboard the vessel. Time served trades people generally required for this position although previous onboard experience may be taken into consideration. Employers generally prefer a minimum level of English for this position.
Air Conditioning Technician (Salary $2100-$2800)
Reporting to the Chief Air Conditioning Technician you would be responsible for all air conditioning and refrigeration units onboard the vessel. At least 3 years experience a must for this position along with technical qualifications regarding training within this field. A good level of English is generally requested by employers. Promotion to the Chief Air Conditioning Technician would be realistic depending on performance.
Chief Air Conditioning Technician (Salary $2400-$3300)
Within this position you would be responsible for all air conditioning and refrigeration units onboard the vessel. You would also be expected to lead and show direction to the Air Conditioning Technician. At least 5 years experience a must for this position along with technical qualifications regarding training within this field. As communication skills are required for this position a good level of English is required.
Electrician (Salary $2400-$2700 US dollars per month)
Reporting to the Chief Electrician you will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of all electrical systems onboard the vessel. Time served trades people generally required for this position although previous onboard experience may be taken into consideration. Employers generally prefer a minimum level of English for this position. Promotion to the Chief Electrician would be realistic depending on performance.
Chief Electrician (Salary $3200-$4000 US dollars per month)
Within this position you would be responsible for all maintenance and repair of electrical systems onboard the vessel. In addition you would schedule activities and supply various management and support to the electricians onboard. Time served trades people generally required for this position although previous onboard experience may be taken into consideration. Employers generally prefer a good level of English as communication is essential.
1st, 2nd,3rd Engineer (Salary $2600-$5400 US dollars per month)
Reporting to the Chief Engineer you will be responsible for all technical maintenance and repair of all electrical and mechanical equipment onboard the vessel. You would also be expected to organise and give support to all staff within the engineering, electrical and mechanical departments including scheduling all routine maintenance. Extensive experience is required for these positions including fluent English skills.
Chief Engineer ($5600-$8700 US dollars per month)
Responsible for all technical operations onboard the vessel. Extensive experience is required for this position along with fluent English skills.
